Essential Information
Appearance: Generally speaking, the most noteworthy feature of the somewhat aged (in comparison with his fellow inhabits average of twenty year olds) man's appearance is the dashing grin he wields, emphasized by whitened teeth that are oddly sharper than your average human's, likely due to his animalistic counterpart. With fairly rounded features, the man also sports handsome pale blue irises, though they usually appear much darker than they really are, depending on the level of light. He wields a good share of brawn (and height too, standing at 6'3), finding strength in a somewhat muscular physique. His fashion sense doesn't really have any recurring traits, for one moment he can be completely formal in his dress sense, and the next fairly casual; it varies with each passing situation. He sports several large scars littered across his back from childhood experiences to be later explained in history.
Personality: Menelaus, on terms of personality, is a whole world more complex than his somewhat simple exterior. Despite his charming portrayal, in the flesh he is a million miles from his expressed personality. Initially, he can come off as being calm, collected, ambitious, and fairly charming; a man of his own inventions, playing off the general façade of a gentleman, when, beneath the false skin, he is a volatile and violent sociopath with no care for the likes of others, able to manipulate with his apparent smooth talking in order for others to perform his bidding. He finds it fairly easy to lie and maintain such lies, having anything but a guilty conscious. Beneath his portrayed gentle nature is a man with little remorse, of whom would likely find it easy to kill without so much as a second thought (or even one, to be honest) when it came down to it. Alongside this, he is obsessive when it comes to women (especially those that are blonde, with blue eyes; that appear like this sister), immensely protective over most without apparent reason. He has a partial soft spot for kids, nonetheless, which could prove a weakness at some point. He does his best to hide his true emotions for the most part, believing them to be a weakness, and generally has commitment issues when it comes to relationships. To sum it up, he basically believes people to be sick (despite him being the one that has all the issues), believing himself to be some sort of hero, and much prefers to be left alone, or in the company of animals (not that he'd be hesitant to harm a creature that got in his way, whether man or beast). It is certain that he has to be triggered to show his true, violent colours, though. Maybe somewhere deep down he cares, and if someone could worm their way deep enough maybe they could uncover the buried instinct to feel for others, but for now, as they say, some people just want to watch the world burn.
History: Conceived during the somewhat early stages of a relationship forming, Menelaus had never been particularly desired. The couple's interest had never resolved around the conception of a child, hence when the news of her pregnancy was delivered, the inexperienced parents were naturally reluctant. In fact, his father didn't want to put his mother through the birth whatsoever, sceptical that they'd even be able to handle a young child with the low funds they had. Despite the protests of the man, his mother refused to partake in an abortion, believing it sick and wrong; instead, she planned on placing him up for adoption after the birth had taken place. However, about mid-birth, her frail form suffered immense complications, though with the birth already underway, the doctors could not perform surgery to remove the child, and thus, despite her wails, they were forced to wait out her birth, and not wanting to take the risk of administering painkilling drugs, the process was long and painful. Moments after he was brought into this world, his mother left it, the blood loss far too great to be recovered from. In being born earlier than initially anticipated, his fragile form was small, even in comparison with the other newborns at the hospital; he was left in hospital for a good few weeks to hopefully gain some strength and size.
When the youngster finally was dismissed from the hospital wing and allowed to return home to his father, things were good and dandy for a good length of time during his early childhood. It was only as he grew to the age of roughly five that his father began to express his true hatred for the kid, believing it to be his fault the mother was dead. With funds low, and his father constantly returning home drunk and volatile, life was undoubtedly rough for the young child. Although the man was distinctively protective of the child, being the last living link between him and his lost love, he hated the child viciously. In fact, his father crafted most of the strange obsessive nature, the violence, and the volatile ways knotted into his estranged personality as of his adulthood. Beaten and ignored for the vast majority of his childhood, he was placed in school a year or two later than he should have been; the outside world failed to notice the conditions he was living in, his scars covered by his clothing, his silence thought as shyness. In being a shifter, his mother had passed down his abilities, and without his father knowing that either of them could perform such seemingly impossible feats of physical change, he was forced to keep that quiet, to lie about it. Nonetheless, he practised his abilities in his free time; using his increased strength (the result of his animalistic counterpart) to his advantage when performing day to day tasks.
His father eventually managed to find a new girlfriend; the abusive ways briefly faltered as his parent found interest within her rather than the beating of his son. And, to be honest, he quite liked the new motherly figure about the house, for she was plenty sweeter than his biological parent. He took to her like a fish to water, so to speak, and actually became emotionally clingy to her, disliking to be left in the house without her. It didn't take more than half a year for another child to be conceived, and oddly enough, his father was all for the birth of this child, despite his reluctance with Menelaus' birth. The boy was completely captivated by his younger sister, of whom arrived the following year, in October. She was undoubtedly a pretty little thing, sporting blonde hair and blue eyes. He swore to protect her to the best of his ability, and did just that as she grew up, incredibly close to the younger sibling, despite their age difference. His father never acted abusively to the young girl, the picture of the new mother; it partially confused the boy as to why that was, though he never questioned it. He hated the man so much as laying a hand on the girl, thus, naturally, he had the baby close whenever was possible.
In his teenage years, the young man had a distinctive violent edge, of which he became noted for wielding during school. Friends were few and far between, as a result, though he learnt to place on a false mask of personality when interacting with others; eventually, he developed a whole new alter ego, and a whole new set of traits nearly completely opposing that of his hidden personality. He built up a tolerance to anger, stress, and negative emotions, reinforcing the new personality in concrete as the years went by, though he knew he was still himself. Somehow, he couldn't bring himself to become this new man, so instead, he faked it to the best of his ability. Sure, it was stupid, but he was young and naïve at the time; confused about what he wanted. His sister never liked what he was becoming, what he was trying to do, though stood by him nonetheless, their close bond never faltering.
He moved away as soon as possible, into California, purchasing a small apartment; anything to avoid his former lifestyle. He cut off contact with his family, including his sister, and started completely from scratch, working his way up in society. That was, until his sister found him. The man had abused his sister, as well, and even sexually exploited her a good number of times. Quite literally blind with rage, and barely giving a second thought to the notion, the man left his sister in the apartment, and returned home, but not merely to visit. His rage rushed forth, powering his body into his bear form, and progressing in a violent attack on the man. When he could finally get a hold on his reeling senses, his father had been beaten senseless, the sheer scale of the wounds horrifying; the man had died long before the attack finished.
Officials managed to decipher the fact that the attack had been, in fact, a bear, which left them completely baffled. Bears in the middle of neighbourhoods, especially in Texas, weren't exactly the most common things, after all. As a result of their confusion, the man was never caught for the violent murder; it triggered further violent urges in his mind, realizing that he could get away with such things. He grew cold, almost emotionless, by the end of the ordeal. His sister knew what he'd done, and heartbroken, she abandoned her brother, and moved to Europe; where exactly he never found out. Equally devastated by her timed disappearance, the man grew obsessed with trying to find her for many years, most nights ending with getting drunk and passing out. He had no respect from anybody at that point; it was indefinitely one of the lowest points of his adult life. It took him many years to recover from it, but when he did, he instead turned his attention to the common interest of the place; horses.
It hardly took any time at all to find one, a rocky mountain horse mare, of whom he purchased without hesitation. He got all the papers and such, though not giving two cents about the information, the essentials were packed in a draw and left there. He focused on the equine, bonding with her, learning to ride, among other things. Almost an escape from the reality of life, so to speak. He still had his personality issues, of course, though he was noticeably more gentle, and calm, with the mare by his side. He still longs to find his sister, no doubt, though the notion has been buried deep within his mind, as have most impulses to actually bond with mankind itself.
