City to City THERE'S NOTHING ROMANTIC ABOUT THE HOURS I KEEP.
Leaning up against his mares stable door Chase stood with his eyes closed. His phone was held away from his ear as he grimaced slightly. His head was pounding and he wondered briefly how long it had been since he had last slept. In truth sleep had never been much of a release anyways, his waking moments had often proven to be less of a nightmare. He was not sure however that this would be one of those times, he longed to be able to shut out the world for a few brief hours. Leaving behind any responsibilities he had for someone else to handle. He could hardly remember a time when he didn't have responsibilities, even in his rebellious youth he had always come home to settle his finances. His wealth may be part old money, and he may not be where he was today without his dads initial help. If you could call apologetic indifference as help of course. But ever since he had cleaned up it had been all his own hard work. It was an addiction stronger than any other he had ever had.
Bringing his phone down and placing the young lad on speaker he flicked through several apps, checking the time as he did. Another grimace as he realised what the time actually was. He had a conference call in under two hours. Then a meeting in the hotel he was staying at directly after. " I think Tim that there is clearly too much to discuss over the phone. We need to get together all the executives across the states and have a conference call." Taking him off speaker Chase closed his eyes again and ran his fingers through his now messy hair. " Lets get an idea of numbers and dates, it needs to be done by the end of the month so drop me an email tomorrow with names and times and we will put something together."
Sliding his phone into his suit pants Chase turned his gaze back to his mare with an almost apologetic look. " Work time for you too missy." He hadn't had enough time to give her the attention she deserved. Besides that one day when she had rightfully dumped him, she was proving to be an insanely forgiving baby. That one day still brought a smile to his lips, for reasons beyond the unplanned dismount. He wondered briefly on what ever had happened to that girl, he had hoped if nothing else she had made it back in one piece.
Unlocking her stable gate he slid in and buckled up her halter, his phone ringing again as he did. He looked at the caller id quickly before letting it ring out. There would be plenty of time for that call later.

i am a flower quickly fading Ugh.
She had felt like a giant asshole for up and leaving that poor man all those days ago, but she couldn't help it. She could only keep her severe anxieties at bay for so long before she broke down in a nervous frenzy. With a shake of her head she sighed, it didn't matter now it wasn't like she'd ever run into the man again anyway.
The woman pushed the meeting into the back of her mind for she had something else to tend to that morning. While she adored her lovely black stallion, he was rapidly approaching the prime years of his life and she knew that she couldn't always drag him to shows as much as she would have liked.
With a heavy heart, both to that thought and of her encounter with the man..Chase. "Get out of my head, goodness." She thought with a shake of her head as she pulled up onto the gravel parking lot that belonged to Lazy Z Ranch, one of the larger western stables in Los Angeles.
She had discovered an ad online regarding a Quarter Horse mare that could apparently do well as a eventing prospect. Sienna had always wanted to venture out into doing a little more than the typical Dressage, but her stallion didn't fancy jumping over things. She looked for the barn that had been described in the email and soon headed over towards what would be called the mare and gelding barn.
With nervous, unconfident steps she headed down the barn aisle and soon came face to face with the young woman who had placed the advertisement. "H-hi, I'm Sienna...I called you about y-your horse?" She stated nervously, taking a brief note of the woman's attire. Flannel shirt, jeans and cowboy boots, how peculiar. The way the brunette popped the gum in her mouth constantly almost made Sienna want to find a window to jump out of, it was just so..aggravating to hear repeatedly.
The brunette looked at the shy woman with a judging eye, "Oh, bout time you got here. I have somewhere else to be in an hour, so make it quick. This is the mare." The painfully slender woman soon led the bay mare out of her stall and out into the aisle. Sienna already knew at first glance that the Quarter Horse would not work as an eventing prospect.
While the bay mare was beautiful, she was much too stocky and lacked something that was similar to a Thoroughbred's lean build, a frame ideal for eventing. "I.." She started as she stared at the equine that was basically a buff barrel on legs. "I'm s-sorry, I'm going to have to say no. She d-doesn't fit the build that I had in m-mind." She stammered, to which the brunette rolled her eyes. "Well you're missing out. This mare can really go through some jumps." Sienna studied the woman for a moment, thinking in her head I wonder if she meant that literally. before the woman hurried to shove the mare back into her stall before hurrying on her merry little way.
When the woman had disappeared outside of the barn, blue eyes shifting back to the mare whose head was hanging over her stall door. "Sorry girl, but you just wouldn't be a good match for me." She stated quietly as she reached forward to rub the mare's muzzle only to have the mare snap her teeth in response. "Perhaps it's a good thing you weren't the one for me." The woman stated with a small burst of laughter as she she immediately withdrew her hand so as to not get it bitten off by the ill-tempered mare. 643 w | @chasehastings | :3

City to City THERE'S NOTHING ROMANTIC ABOUT THE HOURS I KEEP.
Just as he was about to exit the stable, his phone started to buzz again. Unable to keep the irritated look off his face and unable to ignore it he had a quick look at the screen only to answer it within the same second. Some calls couldn't be ignored or put off. As the man on the other end of the phone started to talk Chase turned around and slipped the head collar off his mare. He was fooling himself if he thought that he had time for this today, even a lunge was going to be pushing it right now. Better use of his time would be some coffee, he could set up early for his meeting at the little local cafe. Two hours had seemed like am eternity just before, one phone call and three words later and it was just another day.
He couldn't help on zoning out as a flash looking mare was walked up the aisle before him. Clearly someone was looking at buying her at last. He was unable to keep the surprised tone out of his voice as he noticed who the prospective buyer was. From this distance he could just make out her stuttered words and besides the sheer sadness of them he couldn't help but smile. His interest in the current conversation going on in his ear was dwindling and he attempted to wrap it up with little luck. Slipping out through the door and locking it behind him he strode up to the blonde girl.
As he slid in next to her and with an apologetic look towards his phone he waved in greeting as he mimed a hello. A goofy smile to indicate that he was well aware of how corny the wave was. Pressing his hand to the phone he gave Sienna a long look, his eyes giving away nothing as he tried to compare the girl standing before him to the one who had willingly wrapped herself around him the day they had met. Before of course taking off in a stylish exit so few could pull off. He held is finger up to indicate he would only be a second on the phone. Turning to the side and with the grace of many years of practise ended the one sided conversation and finally manage to hang up his phone. He knew it would be silent only for a moment longer, but there was finally something more pressing than work to think about.
He didn't have time for awkward niceties and he didn't want to give Sienna time to run away again. " Coffee? I am driving." There was no pressure in his words, no trick or deception. He knew enough to know she would spend moments in silence over thinking it, her face would furrow in anxiety as she ran through all the negative possibilities. Either the positives would outweigh the negatives or they wouldn't. He would not sway her either way.

❝ it tastes like a monday ❞ She was mildly disappointed that the mare had not been what she had been looking for in an eventing horse. The mare had a nice look about her coat, obviously healthy and good on her feet. But the mare's attitude, and the fact that she was so stocky in build? It just was an turn-off for her, poor choice of words.
It would seem that her day wouldn't end there, however, as the man whom she had been so surprisingly eager to wrap her arms around met her gaze from down the aisle. Oh dear. She thought to herself, her face flushing a light red in embarrassment. He hadn't forgotten her, she wasn't sure whether to consider that a good or bad thing. She had ran off with only a skimpy apology after all.
His smile only caused her to swallow nervously, maybe he just wanted to say hello, maybe he just---nope he wanted to conversate. "C-coffee?" She echoed, did he even remember what she had done to him mere days before? The question of coffee caused her to think of food, which in turn brought on a domino effect because she felt and heard her stomach rumble in protest. Did she eat breakfast that morning? You know, she wasn't entirely sure.
With a small, timid smile she looked to the man. She couldn't lie and said she had other things planned for the day. Who was she kidding? She didn't have a life, or friends. She just walked in a living nightmare each and every day, just wonderful. "S-sure?" Her statement came out in a questioning tone for she wasn't entirely sure herself.
Should she apologize for running off again so that she wouldn't feel so awkward? "Sorry about...er b-before. I...I just..got n-nervous." She admitted quietly as she set her gaze upon the slightly taller man. It was then that she took it upon herself to lean up on the tip of her toes and plant a light kiss on the man's cheek. "I h-hope I c-can make it up to you?" She asked as she settled back with both of her feet firmly planted on the ground. A frown quickly reappeared on her features, she honestly didn't want to sound like a desperate damsel for she was far beyond that. Feeling the painful tinge of awkwardness she piped up, "So...c-coffee right?" She repeated quietly, as though to get her mind back from wherever terrible place it had ventured to of its own accord.

City to City THERE'S NOTHING ROMANTIC ABOUT THE HOURS I KEEP.
"Coffee?" Chase nodded his head with raised eyebrows in answer to her hesitation. He wondered briefly what kind of person this girl was used to, if any at all. Surely this wasn't a new thing for her. She seemed rather adapt at conversing with people even if it was in a reserved nervous kind of way. Beyond her own self doubt he didn't have her pegged as the kind to hide away all day. It posed a very good question, what did she do all day, what kind of work was she into. Was she studying instead? Family money? Questions that so rarely came to mind when meeting someone new flooded him now.
There were subtle differences this time around, for one she seemed less likely to run for the hills. Her statements still came out as questions but her gaze found his own more often than they did the floor. Then completely unexpectedly she lent forward onto her toes and kissed him. " I think you just did, besides there is nothing to make up for." Placing his hand lightly against the small of her back he turned her towards the barns entrance and started to walk towards his car, well his rental. He let his hand fall away as he started to walk using it instead to play with the lead rope he was carrying. " Yes coffee, I had planned on spending the morning working alone before a meeting. You would be a welcomed distracted. "
" So you are looking for another horse to buy too?" His voice was light hearted as he tried to make conversation, knowing long pauses to be the enemy in this scenario. Although if past encounters were anything to go on, a long pause could also be interesting. He couldn't help smiling at the memory. It didn't take long till they were at his car, he didn't hesitate in opening up the door for her before walking around to his side and sliding in. He knew it was probably time to buy his own car, but his knowledge on cars was limited. The only thing he knew about this car was that it was red, fast and drank a lot. The leather seats were irritating and the way they forced you to sit down and back reminded him of a race car he sat in once. But it wasn't his, so he was allowed to hate it and all its flaws, because at any point he could give it back. It touched on some potential commitment issues.

❝ it tastes like a monday ❞ Sure, she had changed, changed in the fact that she had apparently come up with the courage to actually embrace another human being. Maybe it was just one of her off days, an off day that entitled her to actually act like a normal person for once in her life. "T-that? That was nothing...and you know I.." She trailed off quietly, surely a little peck on the cheek couldn't solve any sort of problem? If it did, well the woman wouldn't feel like her life had gone to complete shit.
Sienna didn't even want to bother with finishing her sentence for there was no point. Their previous encounter had been rather embarrassing, but also a bit..thrilling. She found herself being pulled out of her thoughts as she was led forward gently by the light placement of the man's hand against her back. Her gaze went to the lead rope he was toying with, "You're b-bound to lose an eye like that..you know." She piped up with a hint of worry, so there was little compassion buried deep down in that shattered heart of hers.
The man's next comments fell on deaf ears as the woman trailed off into her own little world inside her head. Why was Chase so nice to her? Was that how people were supposed to be? Of course they should..it would be odd if everyone was meant to be conniving, abusive and manipulative. The world would be entirely horrible if that was the case. She remained silent as she seated herself in the passenger's seat, thanks to the man's kind gesture of opening the door for her to enter.
It took a few moments before she finally stopped zoning out about irrelevant matters. "Huh?" She asked quickly, confused as she had not been paying attention. "Oh..yeah. I was just..looking at other horses, something that would b-be a good eventer. Light's a dressage horse, he'd..never go over a jump." The horse was afraid of heights for crying out loud, how could one imagine a horse to act in such a manner?
Such extensive thinking made the woman ponder deeper on other matters. "D-did you actually want to k-kiss me back then? In..the woods I mean. Or were you like..." Her words were coming out in broken sentences as she fumbled with her thoughts. "Bored?" It sounded ridiculous coming out of her mouth, but her curiosity was preventing her from second guessing the things that came out of her mouth. Actually no, she was thinking what she had just said and now she was just about she had said and was promptly ready to drive herself up the wall in considering every possible outcome with the man's incoming response.

City to City THERE'S NOTHING ROMANTIC ABOUT THE HOURS I KEEP.
It came as a little bit of a surprise that she would be concerned about him hurting himself. The fact that she cared enough to vocalise it seemed to human, so normal. It wasn't as if he thought her to be abnormal or strange or even lack in compassion. It was just something he hadn't expected her to notice. Truth me told he hadn't even noticed he was doing it, something was always in his hands. Ever since he was a kid he had loathed sitting still, always doing something. It shocked him enough that he actually stopped playing with the rope and let both the lead and halter hang down by his side.
It was obvious after that comment that she had zoned out, not ignoring him but in that place she seemed to live in. The place she was in the moment he had met her, somewhere he hoped to never visit. She didn't come to till after he had begun to drive, the car raving almost silently along the freeway with some new aged song playing softly in the background. Then just like that she answered him, as if no time at all had passed. He let it slide, finding it to be a quirk more than an annoyance. " Ahh, a jumper. You play on that side of the fence then." He said mockingly as he negotiated the car through the light mid day traffic. " I will try not to hold that against you of course" He looked over and winked at her to show that there was no hard feelings. He didn't actually hold up the notion that western was superior to english or visa versa. " Maybe she would be good for me then, I am in the market for a barrel horse, one that preferably can't jump a log."
Woah, quick topic change. Just like that she tossed another curve ball at him. He couldn't keep up, it was showing him once again how out of practise he was. He was used to simplistic people, the ones who were easy to read. They shared similar goals and drives. They came from the same side of the track with similar values and morals. He found that he liked it, he couldn't control or know everything. It was refreshing... right?
Despite his current state of confusion at the topic change and the seriousness of the question he couldn't help but laugh. He knew the moment that it happened that he would come to regret it. He hadn't meant to, it was just that he wasn't sure how she could have possibly come to that conclusion. As if boredom was the leading force in all spur of the moment choices. Well ... now that he thought about it. With a shake of his head an attempt to bring his serious face back he realised he had been silent for too long. He reached over and laid a hand on her knee. Taking his gaze off the road to look at her to show her a silent apology for being so callous. " Yes I did really want to kiss you and no I did not do it out of boredom." Taking his eyes off her to concentrate on the road once more but leaving his hand where it was he continued. " You are a beautiful and intriguing women. Besides, I am fairly sure it was you who kissed me first." He stuck his tongue out at her to try and defuse the tension.
They had arrived at the little cafe and he was able to find parking directly out front. Turning the car off her shifted in his seat to look at her, head resting back into the seat. " It wasn't boredom that made me ask you out today either. I for one am glad I was able to run into you again."

❝ it tastes like monday ❞ To be honest, Sienna was a bit terrified of going over jumps on a horse as well. Her own mount's fear may have stemmed from what his rider was feeling, thus making quite the chaotic reaction from the both of them. "Of course.." She responded quietly. Perhaps if she got an older jumping horse, her tensing at the reins wouldn't tamper too much with the horse's performance.
She remembered the horse's finicky attitude and it made her frown in distaste. "If..if you l-like a horse that'll snap at you." She hated tripping over her words, it was too much of an inconvenience. Her mind changed pages often, so it never crossed her mind that she was actually changing the subject too rapidly for someone to keep up with how fast she was thinking in her head.
The man met her question with silence, which caused the woman to worry. Clearly she had said something wrong, the man was upset with her, she just knew it. It was a shame that they were inside a moving vehicle now, if not she would have gladly made her exit at this point.
Just as she was about to think of the absolute worst case scenario, she felt the man's hand upon her knee. The simplest of gestures indicated that she hadn't angered the man, at least not at the moment. She was relieved to say the least, and at the spur of the moment, she settled her hand atop the man's own.
His comments only caused the woman's face to flush red once more, becoming quite embarrassed at the man's comments. "T-thanks." She stammered nervously, although she soon found herself smiling at the man's next string of words. "Oh, I did not!" She protested, reaching over to slap the man's shoulder playfully once they had arrived at the quaint little cafe.
The man's words comforted her even if that had not been their intended purpose. "Well..t-thanks for not asking me out due to boredom." She spoke quietly as she unbuckled her seatbelt and leaned over, a trembling hand reaching to nervously touch the side of the man's face. That is, before she took it upon herself to kiss the man promptly after before quickly moving back to her seat.
It felt like a little slice of freedom, and a way to make up for how she had ditched the poor man in the woods during their first encounter. "So..c-coffee right?" She stammered quietly, although there was a warm smile slowly pulling at the corners of her mouth.
She didn't wait for the man to respond for she had already gotten out of the car. What was she doing? Sienna was just trying to live a little bit, and if Chase would allow her to do that, even if for a fleeting moment, she'd take it. ❝ wish i knew what to say ❞ @chasehastings | 505 words | muse: no theme bam

City to City THERE'S NOTHING ROMANTIC ABOUT THE HOURS I KEEP.
" Any time" His words were cut off short as she reached over and placed a hand tenderly against his face. He raised his eyebrows questingly at another leap forward. It was seven steps forwards and fourteen back with this girl, all in the space of sixty seconds. Then, just as he thought he had her pegged she would throw a curve ball, unsettling him, driving him to know more. It was done well, if unintentionally. Normally it would be all too much, too much to think about, too much work, too much second guessing. That had never been the kind of girl he had been interested in. Till now anyways.
His eyebrows raised further in completely surprise as she leaned over and kissed him. Usually a lot smoother than this Chase was once again caught off guard and she was able to slip out of the car before he could pull her back in. With a shake of his head he too slipped out of the vehicle and walked around to her side. Once again slipped a hand around her to rest in the small of her back as they made their way to the front door. The same door that he causally held open for her ushering her inside. As he did he leant down and whispered words only she could here. " There is more to you than meets the eye Miss Sienna."
Taking the lead he steered to a corner booth in the far corner, preferring as always to have no one behind him and a clear view of the room he settled his back against the cushioned seat. " So, Coffee." He finished her earlier question with a knowing smile, remembering all too well not only the small kiss in the car but also the other time she had taken the lead. His words were laced with that memory. " So what does the rest of your day look like? Any grand plans?"
The place was reasonably quiet and a waiter wasted no time in coming over in the hopes they would already know their order. Keeping in the theme of not letting Sienna think too much Chase didn't send the young serving girl away. " Hi, I would just like a short black thank you and Sienna is after?" Before she had kissed him he would have expected her to squirm in her seat as both he and the waiter stared at her expectantly. Now he wasn't sure what to expect.

❝ it tastes like a monday ❞ It would appear that the woman operated best when she was the one taking the lead, no matter the circumstance in question. However, when someone tried to take the feeling of self control from the woman, it was then that she was freeze in anxiety, fear, and doubt.
A small smile lit up her facial features as she yet again felt the presence of the man's hand upon her lower back. "F-for some reason..I highly doubt that." She struggled to not stammer in her sentences, it only served to make her feel even more self conscious.
As she was ushered inside by the man, presumingly someone whom she could call a friend. In that instance she reached up and flicked the man gently on the nose with her index finger. "You're o-over friendliness is a bit..hmm.." She trailed off at the end of her sentence, unsure of how to describe the feeling she got from the man's actions.
Huffing softly she turned and allowing the man to take the lead, she herself trailing quietly behind him like a lost pup. Oddly enough as the pair approached the booth that lay in the shop's corner, she found herself not wanting to sit opposite the man.
With quiet hesitation, the blond woman sank into the cushioned seat, placing herself next to Chase. Alas, she kept her gaze on the table feeling quite embarrassed by her choice in seating arrangements.
Sienna sank into a sudden silence at the man's next question. "Um..well..uh..I had p-planned to go right home after..you know..looking at that m-mare. So..nothing g-grand here." Why was it that anxiety insisted upon creeping in at random moments? Times when she was starting to feel like a normal individual for a fleeting moment?
A frown removed the smile that had formed upon the woman's face as her hands trembled slightly, her anxiety slinking around the mental corners of her mind, threatening to drown her in pointless fears. She had been in her own little dark world when she realized that both Chase and the waitress were staring at her? She looked on in fear for a few seconds before murmuring something along the lines of "Unsweetened lemon tea." An odd combination, but she just wasn't feeling the need for coffee at the moment.
She waited impatiently for the waitress to depart before she folded her arms upon the table and buried her head within the makeshift hideaway from curious glances. She hated being fearful, those few instances where she had been bold enough to reach out to Chase, that was how a normal person was supposed to be. But this? City to City THERE'S NOTHING ROMANTIC ABOUT THE HOURS I KEEP.
Chase is a patient man, he cares very little about the world around him less it directly effects him. It gives him a shallow appearance of sorts, if a little self absorbed. It wasn't that he didn't care for his fellow humans or his friends; the few he has. It was just that the world was too big, his life was too busy to be effected by the thoughts and concerns of others. Very self assured he let the criticism of others roll off and was more than capable of walking away from a train wreck of a situation. He felt no need to change those around him, impose his beliefs on them. He was simply happy to live his life the best he could with what he had. So it came as a slight shock to him when he felt a momentary wave of anger as the young girl buried her head against the table. Acting as a child would, hiding behind their mothers skirt.
He believes in shades of grey in everything. Nothing is ever seen as simply black and white with him. In turn it is near impossible to anger him for long, he will quickly talk himself out of it. Able to see the other side, able to justify even his enemies actions. So even now as he watched the scared girl in front of him, hiding he knew that he had no right to be angry. He knew that she was suffering in ways he couldn't possibly begin to understand or feel. Who was he to suggest she should simply up and deal with it. He more than accepted who she was as a person, just as he did with everyone he came across. Love it or hate it, he didn't judge. That did not mean however that certain things don't hit a nerve from time to time.
With a deep audible breath he reached over and placed a finger under the blonde girls chin, leaning down ever so slightly to look at her. He brushed a finger across her lips " You have a voice." Pausing he ran his index finger down the corner of her eye. " You have eyes, but." Pausing once again he put a finger lightly against the side of her head, tapping them gently against her temple. " Most of all, you have a brain. One that you control, completely. Every thought, every moment of panic, enjoyment or fear comes from up here. Everything you say, everything you see is controlled by you. Do not waste it by seeing what you expect to and saying only what you think you should.
The drawn out pause was broken by the convenient timing of the waitress as she placed their order on the table and promptly left. Waiting for her reaction Chase leant back into the seat again, a small smile on his lips as he watched her.

❝ it tastes like monday ❞ It was an understatement to say she was scared of the simplest things in life. She was awkward at socializing with most people, and it was a miracle that she was even able to breathe in the presence of Chase. Perhaps it was because the man was at least a little bit welcoming, at least that's how he came off in her head.
She was abruptly pulled from her dark world of shadows and fears as she felt the man's touch upon her chin. Frightened blue eyes dragged up to meet the man's gaze as though awaiting him to reprimand her for doing something out of line. She was surprised, however, that the man was ready to offer advice from her situation.
Sienna shook her head slightly in disbelief. "N-..no I can't control what I t-think.. How could that be t-true when it happens without me even having to think about it..." She responded quietly, as she reached up slowly and grabbed hold of the man's hand. "S-sometimes..I feel like I'm living a n-nightmare. I left y-you the day we met...because I got s-scared..I.." Without even realizing her actions, she interlaced her fingers with the man's own, her eyes avoiding his gaze yet again.
The moment, if it could even be called that, was broken as the waitress returned with their desired orders. Sienna had hurriedly released her suddenly tightened grip upon the man's hand. She remained silent for the next couple of minutes as she took to finding refuge in sipping the unsweetened tea that she had ordered.
